Our approach

Advice that considers the related questions.

A stock sale may coincide with a charitable gift and a move. A family may have several trusts, private investments and business interests. An owner’s decisions may affect both the company’s books and the household return.

We examine the relevant tax questions together, compare alternatives and help with the payments, filings and coordination that follow. We also welcome clients who want help only with their individual return; you do not need a complex situation to work with us.

Relationships

Personal introductions. A considered working relationship.

When we begin working together, we introduce the people handling your engagement and explain how to reach them. A return, a focused project and an ongoing advisory relationship have different contact and review arrangements.

Every client has a lead contact; for ongoing advisory, the lead contact coordinates the agreed work with a supporting team. Your tax history and open questions stay with the engagement, with introductions and handovers when responsibilities change.

Coordination

Alongside your existing advisors.

You do not need to replace your attorney, investment advisor, trustee or other trusted professional. We can work with them directly on the tax questions included in your engagement.

That can mean a focused transaction question or broader tax coordination across family members and entities. We agree the role, who is involved and what may be shared.

Legal support

When the work calls for an entity or trust

Affiliated Hickok Tax Law, PC can form entities, create or amend trusts, and prepare related legal documents. We coordinate the legal implementation with the tax analysis.

Legal services are provided by Hickok Tax Law, PC under a separate engagement.

Founder & principal

Eric Hickok

Eric Hickok

Eric Hickok founded Hickok Tax Advisory and leads its tax planning and advisory work for individuals, families and business owners. His work centers on complex trusts, business formation and equity compensation, and on decisions involving business interests, investments and family wealth.

Before focusing on tax, Eric worked in residential lending at Wells Fargo and co-founded and led Codex Lending, a mortgage banking and brokerage firm. Running a business shapes how he advises: looking past the tax result to cash flow, financing and the decisions that follow.

Eric works with the firm’s team on planning, client relationships and technical questions, and alongside clients’ attorneys, investment advisors and other professionals to carry the tax analysis through to implementation.

Eric earned his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and his B.S. from the University of California, San Diego.

California attorney · State Bar No. 332594

Eric is also a principal of Hickok Tax Law, PC, a separate law firm. Working with Hickok Tax Advisory does not create an attorney-client relationship; legal services require a separate engagement with the law firm.
